Rose Cottage is an excellent base for exploring North Cumbria and the Lake District, with many historic attractions and some fantastic walking / cycling to be had nearby.

The cottage is located in the Northern Fells - a quieter, less well known part of the Lakes, but just as good as the tourist spots.

There is much to do with nothing too far away.

Ullswater and Keswick are both within a short distance.

Hadrian's Wall, Historic Carlisle, Solway Coast and the picturesque Eden Valley are also a short drive.

No matter what you enjoy doing, this is an outdoor enthusiasts paradise. Someting to suit everybody, no matter whatever your level of experience.

Hesket Newmarket & the Caldbeck Fells

Hesket Newmarket is a lovely village with a market cross on the village green, surrounded by neatly kept cottages dating from the 18th century.

There is a village shop/post office, together with tearooms. The multi-award winning village pub, The Old Crown, is owned by the villagers themselves. The Old Crown's micro brewery, the Hesket Newmarket Brewery, is located behind the pub. The pub usually has at least 5 real ales on at any one time which are usually CAMRA award winners. Excellent home-cooked bar meals are also served.

The Caldbeck and Uldale Fells are an undiscovered part of the Lakes. You can walk for miles without seeing a soul in beautiful scenary. Bliss!

All of the hills at the back of Skiddaw and Blencathra are within easy reach, with more gentle walks to be had around Hesket Newmarket, Caldbeck, Ireby and Uldale area.

The Lake District World Heritage Site

The Lake District is designated a "World Heritage Site" due to the magnificant scenary and unique landscape. What better place to spend some time?

The bustling outdoor adventure town of Keswick is only 25 minutes drive away, nestled between stunning lakes and mountains. Challenging fell walks and water sports abound.

Dinghy sailing, canoeing and windsurfing are available locally at Ullswater and at Nichol End on Derwentwater nr Keswick.

Ullswater is the second biggest lake and one of the most beautiful. Take the Ullswater Steamer from Pooley Bridge and combine this with a splendid fell or lake shore walk.

Aira Force, Helvellyn (3018ft) and Striding Edge are places nr Ullswater that are must see.

Historic Carlisle & Hadrian's Wall

The historic border city of Carlisle is an interesting place with its castlecathedral, Guildhall Museum and Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery.

Enjoy a day at the races at Carlisle Race Course - a jocky club racecourse. Racing fixtures are available most of the year and there are family fun days.

The Solway Aviation Musuem - home to a collection of aircraft, aviation artifacts and displays reflecting Britain’s aviation history.

Hadrian's Wall Country - Discover the World Heritage Site of the famous Roman Wall that stretches from the Solway to Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The Northern frontier of a mighty empire that once covered the known World.

Cockermouth & The Solway Coast AONB

Cockermouth was made famous in November 2009 when it flooded. Now the main street area has recovered and the shops, pubs and restaurants renovated. It makes for a fantastic place to do a spot of shopping in the many indivually owned shops, superb restaurants and traditional pubs.

Check out Jennings Brewery, brewing excellent beer since 1828 - take a brewery tour and discover the history of Cumbria's favourite tipple. It's also home to the birthplace of William Wordsworth at the Wordsworth House and Garden - owned by the National Trust.

We're near to the Solway Coast AONB, famous for its stunning sunsets, abundant bird life, beautiful coastline walks and numerous golf courses.

Also the historic ports of Maryport and Whitehaven are worth a visit.
